Mama Ngina Waterfront Park: Easy-Going Hub

Every coastal town deserves an easy-going, upbeat, seafacing outdoor park full with bubbling laughter, cheerful patrons, light-hearted vendors, stalls selling traditional delicacies and the joys of mingling with cultures from all walks of life. The south-end of Mama Ngina Drive is Mombasa’s answer for a no-frills seafront park. It has a great history, too. On the Portuguese maps they called it “Fortim da Ponta Resting”. Before long the area became an early settlement, onto a ground- zero during the Arab-Portuguese wars and then Turkish or Ottoman–Portuguese wars of 1586–1589. In the late 1890s the British gave it a new name “Azania Drive”.

Although in time the space came to have limited access to the public thanks to colonial trepidations about the security of the harbour, ergo in the late 1930s the army’s fixed defenses along Azania Drive, consisted of two 6-pounder guns, an Anti-Aircraft light machine gun emplacement, a pillbox, coastal artillery search light and a generator bunker. designed to protect the shipping channel into port Kilindini; the southern branch of Mombasa Harbour. In 1991 Mama Ngina Drive was gazetted as a National Monument to both perpetuate its rich history and importance to the community.

Still, politically influential individuals had planned to degazette the property in 1993, get it allocated to them by the lands office, and resell it at enormous profit to commercial developers. They encountered unexpected opposition from the local groups, including the Friends of Fort Jesus and the Muslim Human Rights League, and had to abandon their covert plan. In 2018, Government of Kenya approved a Kes. 460 Million revitalization project of the park. Then and now, the waterfront panorama is the star here and the main activity is walking across the parkways, sampling different local delicacies and resting at its well designated sitting areas.

From the walkways visitors can watch ferries at Likoni making unending rounds, like clockwork, across Tudor channel, in an unvarying praxis only broken by the occasional jumbo cargo ships headed for Kilindini Harbour. Pre 2020 there were about 150 traders along Mama Ngina; selling food, artefacts and other products. Since the upgrades in 2020, 300 traders, mostly local, now operate at the park and its prosperity has inclined right along with its popularity and new, fresh look.
