Unusual Attractions in Mombasa

Likoni Floating Ferry: Liwatoni Footbridge

Less of an attraction than it is a necessary stand-in for the more than 300,000 people who crisscross Kilindini Channel each day, served only by Likoni Ferry since 1937, the new 1.2 km long bailey type floating bridge was commissioned for service in 2020. Made of lattice steel designed from pre-fabricated parts, it has a 6 meter walking deck on a 715 meter long floating section. The middle part of it has a 150 meter swing opening to allow the passage of ships calling on Mombasa Port to transit through the channel. It spans from Liwatoni on the island side to Ras Bofu (Bofu Maskani) east of Shelly Beach and Likoni Ferry on the mainland.

Icons of the city, across Mombasa’s most important channel, Likoni Ferry, which has been shuttling passengers over Kilindini continually for over nine decades, may be the most convenient way to cross the channel, but far from the most scenic. Anyone who lives in Mombasa these days, or a frequent visitor, knows that the ferry is a short, sometime enjoyable way to cross the channel, but is all too familiar with the trouble associated with the breakdown of the old ferries that have been dog trotting the channel for ages. This new bridge is just the answer. It is useful for both residents of Mombasa and the ever-growing number of visitors to the Kenyan coast. During off-peak hours it is a scenic way to cross the channel.

Around Kenya are a selection of natural landmarks, cultural shrines, architectural oddities, and technological installations that offer incredible, almost surreal experiences that can make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. Hauntingly beautiful to some, eerie sights for others, and still, for others, down right strange, these site provide unique experiences for adventurous travelers.
