1 km east of Railways Roundabout Park along Mwembe Tayari Road onto A109 Road, just past Naivas Supermarket Mwembe, is the statue of Mombasa African Memorial, a World War memorial statue commemorating the native and Arab soldiers who fought in the 1914 to 1918 wars. Akin to the Statue War Memorial along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi, it is a solemn reminder of the brave fighters who bore arms ‘for King and for County’. The memorial embodies a recent era in Mombasa’s long history dating back to 900 AD. At the start of WWI, Tanzania was the core of German East Africa. From the invasion of 1915, Commonwealth forces fought a protracted and difficult campaign against a rather small but very skilled German force under the command of General von Lettow-Vorbeck. The Germans finally surrendered on November 25, 1918, a fortnight after the European armistice. The troops who died with the Commonwealth forces in the East African campaign of WWI are honored by the memorials at Mombasa, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
Kenya has several war memorials that commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers and civilians during various conflicts, including World War I and World War II. These memorials serve as places for reflection and remembrance, and are important historical and cultural landmarks honoring those who fought and died.
