Railways Roundabout Park: Railways Garden

The backers of saving the old Uganda Railway from going to rack and ruin will be happy to know that an big first step has been taken to safeguard its heritage, at the Railways Roundabout Park 200 ms west of Mombasa Station. Like many things ‘Lunatic Express’ it was overdue for revitalization, both to conserve its heritage and meaning to public wealth. Moreover, it was the placement of the Uganda Railway that exogenously led to the growth of Mombasa. And with the dawn of the SGR bringing in travellers to Mombasa in the thousands each day, the park has much to gain from. After years of neglect and falling into disrepair, the park was reopened in 2020 after a facelift to its greens, pathways, sitting areas, pools, and amenities. The park, as restful as it is relaxing, is in the middle of the city to boot.

In many respects, Mombasa has been on the forefront of urban revitalization in Kenya. In the past decade it has been keen on renewing the community spirit of its early framers and planners of proper growth of the city with composed public spaces.
