Wajir Giraffe Sanctuary
Nature Parks & Sanctuaries in Wajir Wajir Giraffe Sanctuary: A Race to Save Giraffes Situated just 12 km south of Wajir town off B9 Mandera-Wajir-Isiolo Road, Wajir Giraffe Sanctuary works closely with the Somali Giraffe Project to create a safe haven for giraffes. The Somali giraffe project operates within the counties of Garissa, Wajir, Mandera in eastern Kenya, and parts of southwest Somalia along the border. This region hosts perhaps the largest numbers of reticulated giraffes. Like in many areas in this region, the giraffes occur in communally owned and unprotected lands. Despite the majority of the somali giraffe populations being found within north-eastern Kenya, conservation efforts have been limited within the region due to its inaccessibility. To fan the flames, the region’s inhabitants are nomadic pastoralists of Somali descent keeping large herds of livestock as their major source of livelihood, and who sometimes poach the giraffes for meat. Around Kenya are to be found a hatful of delightful nature parks and sanctuaries, many of these being community initiatives to protect wildlife in their natural habitats. Fairly small in comparison to the national parks and reserves, they offer a more intimate exposure to the wild, to fully appreciate the local flora and fauna.
