Virgin Mary Rock: Recognizable Rock Portrait
14 km south of Kalamba at Katheka Village, in proximity to Maanoni Dam, lies the peculiar and kooky Virgin Mary Rock. It offers an excellent facility to round-off the perfect trip of the far-reaching history of Makueni with modern Christianity. Were it not for its undeniable resemblance to one of Christianity’s plainly recognizable emblems, it would be abstruse to equate this site to its rural setting. Impressive for where it’s found, import, and the mystery of the rock itself, Virgin Mary Rock, discovered in 2015, has a naturally imprinted indentation bearing resemblance to the recognizable portrait of Mary Mother of Jesus clutching Baby Jesus on her laps. The site is marred by both myth and mystery, which seems much more a product of the fact that the revered AIC Kalamba was established not too far north of here. So much so that there are plans to officially install this oddity as a National Shrine.
Around Kenya are a selection of natural landmarks, cultural shrines, architectural oddities, and technological installations that offer incredible, almost surreal experiences that can make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. Hauntingly beautiful to some, eerie sights for others, and still, for others, down right strange, these site provide unique experiences for adventurous travelers.
