Makindu Handicraft Co-operative Society

Makindu Handicrafts, a self help wood handicraft society located at the Mbuinzau market, off A109 Nairobi-Mombasa highway not far from the turnoff to Kibwezi, is famous for producing native handmade crafts. The society is primarily composed of local artisans, including women, who create a variety of handmade products to generate income and support their families. Makindu Handicrafts focuses on the promotion and retail of Akamba cultural products and especially of the wooden crafts and locally knit antiques. Among the popular items are its fancy traditionally woven baskets (woven from sisal, banana fiber and other local materials) that are environment-friendly. Decorative items, utensils and sculptures are popular, too.
