World Heritage Sites in Migori Thimlich Ohinga Cultural Heritage Landscape Located 46 km northwest of Migori town, the ancient dry-stone walled settlement more proper Thimlich Ohinga, thought to be built in 16th Century, is arguably the largest and best-kept traditional enclosures depicting early settlements typical of the first pastoral fork in the Lake Victoria Basin. Recognized for its historical and cultural significance it is also one of the best-preserved examples of early human settlement in East Africa. Thimlich Ohinga is linked to Bantu-speaking people, and its intricate design reflects early social, economic, and political organization. The most obvious features are the dry-stone masonry, where stones are stacked without the use of mortar, in instead interlocking brick configuration encircles the landscape in a fort-like formation, with low entrances to bolster the security. The walls, standing up to 4.2 meters high and 1.5 meters thick, provided protection against external threats, including raiding parties and wildlife. The name "Thimlich Ohinga" is derived from the Luo language, with "Thimlich" meaning "a large forest" or "dense bush," and "Ohinga" meaning "a great fortress" or "a large enclosure." Together, the name Thimlich Ohinga aptly refers to the inimitable "fortress in the bush," emphasizing its strategic location in a wooded area. Up until now, its surrounding landscape has retained its jungle-like perspective. Formerly known as the Liare Valley or the "frightening dense forest", this area presented unique challenges not least of impending predatory wildlife, tribal hostilities and brutal raiders. Inside the main enclosure, there are smaller sub-enclosures used for specific functions, such as keeping livestock, storing food, and as a living space. These divisions suggest a well-organized community with a focus on security and resource management. Further, the areas for occupation are clearly demarcated in accordance to the traditional system of living, still seen widely in the region. It provides a yardstick to reference the spatial planning and early settlement patterns around Lake Victoria. The settlement is built on a hill with terraced slopes, which helped in managing rainwater and preventing soil erosion. The terraces also provided extra defense by creating obstacles for potential invaders. In 2018, Thimlich Ohinga Cultural Landscape was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its importance as an archaeological and historical site. It is considered an outstanding example of dry-stone construction and provides a rare insight into the way early communities in East Africa organized themselves socially, economically, and politically. A stellar testimony of settlement patterns and spatial community relations around the Lake Victoria region, which displays the successive occupation by different kin from various linguistic origins during an important episode in the settlement between the late 16th and 17th centuries. The site is managed by the National Museums of Kenya (NMK), which works to preserve and maintain the structures. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the site from natural degradation and human activities. It is located 10 km north of Macalder Site, and reached via Migori-Muhuru Road or Migori-Nyarongi Road. Kenya is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites that reflect her rich cultural heritage and diverse natural landscapes; classified as 3 natural sites and 5 cultural sites, collectively embodying valuable heritage and fantastic scenery. These sites are among the priceless assets, not only for Kenya, but of humanity as a whole.
