Attractions in Elgeyo Marakwet Teren River Bridge: An Interesting Prospect The areas around Tot, Kapsowar, and Arror, in the northern frontier of Elgeyo Marakwet, situated on the marches of the Cherangani Hills footslopes, have beautiful scenery. One way to appreciate this beauty is along Teren River Bridge, passing across a section where the Kerio River cuts a path round an outcrop of basalt, resulting in a gorge dotted with multiple swirl holes and odd formations. Its name is thought to be derived from the shape of its swirl pools that resemble the native cooking pots known as "teren" in the local language. During the dry season, the Kerio River dries up, leaving in its wake an art-like river bed. The swirl-holes, etched into the basalt bed of the river by stones trapped, held down and spun in the raging flood, create a unique mosaic and an interesting subject for photography. Near the confluence of rivers Arror and Kerio is a noteworthy place where the flow, over millennia, has had to cut its way through a basalt outcrop. Here it has formed a gorge, locally known as the Teren. Nearby is a steel bridge across the river. It is a fine vantage point to stare down into the Kerio Gorge, particularly in the rainy season when the Kerio is a foaming torrent pouring through the narrow passage and carrying with it a heavy load of stones, boulders and tree-trunks. This area has plenty of avifauna too observable from the vantage of the bridge. Teren River Bridge is located 28.5 km north of Iten town, at Arror.
