Arror Dam

Dams in Elgeyo Marakwet Arror Dam: Still Work in Progress In 2017, work began on the construction of Arror Dam, part of the two hydro-electric dam projects in Elgeyo Marakwet – alongside the Kimwarer Dam. With the launch of the bid for the topographical survey, some progress in the predesign phase of the Arror dam and the site investigation bid, it was launched. The expectation was that Arror Dam would be a 101m high earth structure, at an altitude of 2300masl, and 553m long, impounding 63Mm3 of water to be used for multipurpose scopes. Hydro power (157GWh), irrigation (2000ha) and potable water for 40.000 people were to bring benefit to the local farmers. Expected to be about 2.8 km2, it was to add to the beauty of the scene around Arror. River Arror, where the proposed Arror Dam will be built over, flows into Kerio River. The River Kerio partly rises on the northern slopes of the Amasya Hills, to the west of Lake Bogoria. It flows northward through the Kerio Valley, between the Tugen Hills and Elgeyo Escarpment, from where it presses on northward, often through deep and narrow valleys, to enter Lake Turkana in a delta just south of the river plain fed by Turkwel and Lokichar Rivers. Source to mouth Kerio flows for 350 km. In September 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta cancelled the projects – Kimwarer and Arror Dams – after receiving an adverse report from a technical committee, formed following the discovery of irregularities and improprieties surrounding the two projects. The cancellations came in a financial year when Arror dam received Sh11 billion, with an additional Sh5.2 billion received towards Kimwarer Dam. Kenya has several reservoir dams that play a consequential roles in water supply, hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, flood control, and other water-related activities. The most famous of these are Seven Forks Dams along the Tana River. While reservoir dams are critical infrastructure projects that contribute to Kenya's economic development, they are also visually stunning go-to destinations.
