Natural Landmarks in Bungoma Sangalo Rocks: An Easy and Achievable Hike There are several awe-inspiring rock formations around Bungoma County that are well-known for their massive size and striking appearances. One of the surpassing example of these are Sangalo Rocks. A noteworthy roadside attraction in and by itself, most travellers to Bungoma take in a tour of the distinguished Sangalo Rock in combination with Buteyo Miti Park and Mwibale Wa Mwanja. At close quarters, Sangalo Rocks offer pleasing scenery and a lovely hiking and walking opportunity. Unlike the Mwibale Wa Mwanja, which is a massive granite monolith, the Sangalo Rocks are a castle-like structure set against the backdrop of yet more large granite boulders. They appear as prominent rocks on the top of a hill on the left as you drive from Bungoma to Mumias. Although the dispersal of these large and oddly shaped rocks is obviously random, sculpted by erosion over centuries, locals and visitors have always sought to put logical order to this organized chaos of nature. According to the locals, Sangalo Rocks bear a canny resemblance to a chink or gap in the front teeth, with one peak appearing to clutch a big rock smack of a tooth loose in the socket – or one that's about to fall out. Other myths have also sought to explain their origins: They were formed when two giants got into a rock tossing contest. The granite is not of uniform type throughout Bungoma and at Sangalo the rocks are of the brown-grey, medium grained leucocratic rock type. Aside from the witty, jocose allusions attached to the site, Sangalo Rocks are an easy and achievable hiking challenge, offering stunning vistas of the town and verdant farms. To access the site requires walking through farmers' plots, but they are kind and accommodating. Like many of the hills around Bungoma County, the Sangalo Rocks are considered spiritual, so be respectful to locals and the space they live in. Don't forget to say hello and goodbye, along with showing respect. From Bungoma, head south on Mumias road through town and past the matatu stage. When you reach the "Happy Moments" sign, turn left towards Sangalo. Continue for several kilometers until road merges with another road from the left. Keep right and continue a few more kilometers until you see a Sangalo Institute of Technology sign on your LEFT (ignore the earlier one on your right). Turn left at the sign toward the obvious tall rocks, down a small, dirt road until it ends. Follow the foot patch through the farms, keeping right. Kids will likely show you the trail.
