Nature Parks in Bungoma Buteyo Miti Park: A Community Haven Tree parks mean different things to different people, and go by various banners including urban parks, arboretums, community parks, conservations parks and naturals forests. Yet, in many respects, the mission of tree parks is to provide an experience where visitors encounter various ‘nature' activities such as walking trails, educational programs, tree identification signage and community events. The goal is to promote environmental awareness, conservation, and enjoyment of nature. Started in 1969 by the Measures for Indigenous Trees Improvement (MITI), the 32-acres Buteyo Miti Park is a nature based park of rolling greens, dandy woodland, flourishing countryside, traditional rondavels and animal orphanage. It a great place to get out and enjoy the blissful outdoors. The forest itself is made up of indigenous trees, some over 100 years old. In all, there are over 300 different species of tree growing at Buteyo Miti Park. It is a lovely communal green space. Also found within the park is the Igor's Corner Arboretum and the Lukoba Guest House modeled on an old Bukusu villages setup. Of interest nearby Buteyo Miti Park is: Mwibale Wa Mwanja, Sangalo Rocks, Kwesule, Luucho Hills, Mount Elgon National Park and Kakamega Forest Reserve. Buteyo Miti Park is situated about 8 km southeast of Bungoma town along C33 Bungoma-Mumias Road nearby the Sangalo Institute of Science and Technology. It's open daily from 8 am to 6 pm.
