Mugabo Caves

Caves in Migori County Mugabo Caves: Nyumba ya Mungu The occurence and natural formations of caves, created over millennia through the processes of weathering, erosion, and geological shifts, is often fascinating. In Kenya, particularly around Lake Victoria and parts of the Rift Valley, several caves have cultural relevance. Shortly before arriving at Muhuru Bay, where Migori-Muhuru Road terminates, one may be interested in touring Mugabo Caves. A trip to Mugabo Caves can also be organized in circuit to visit pristine beach at Muhuru Bay, Thimlich Ohinga Site and the Macalder Mines without too much difficulty. Set back within a comely configuration of huge rocks overgorwn with grass and shrubs, Mugabo Caves, locally dubbed Nyumba ya Mungu, is a natural enclave, with a house-like layout, often used as a religious shrine. It is, without doubt, a unique destination sold short. There is a naturally formed staircase that leads inside the cavernous caves. The rooftop offers a lovely viewing ledge from where the modest Alulu and Migingo Islands are easily sighted. Then, there's the scenic landscape around these caves which is scattered about with large boulders and rocks eke-named the Mugabo Stones which makes for a pleasant walking tour. If the above were not sufficient, Mugabo Caves were historically used as a hideout by the locals from the British colonialists during the colonial wars. Likewise, these caves acted as a surveillance point where during wars, a warrior would climb the rock on top of the caves to survey the situation at its strategic points. To date, the locals believe that God listens to the prayers in those eerily quite abode. Others believe that the spirits of their ancestor’s hover around Lake Victoria and given that the caves are adjacent to the water body; the spirits are bound to hear them. Formed by the dissolution of soluble rocks over millennia by acidic water, as underground streams and water currents over time created large networks of tunnels and caverns, Mugabo Caves Rock are remarkable natural structures with profound cultural, historical, and ecological importance. Open year-round, a visit here requires a good watch for weather, sturdy shoes, and a flashlight to scout the deeps.  Mugabo Caves are located 52 km west of Migori town; 30 km to Thimlich Ohinga Landscape, and just 3 km before Muhuru Bay via Migori-Muhuru Road. While Kenya may not be as well-known for its caves as some other destinations, there are still some fascinating caving sites worth exploring. Before embarking on a caving expedition, it's essential to ensure safety by going with a knowledgeable local guide, wearing appropriate gear, and being aware of potential hazards.
