Mombasa’s Tusks: Pembe Mbili

Locally dubbed Pembeni, Pembe Mbili, or again Pembe za Ndovu, the ornamental aluminum tusks along Moi Avenue (branching off Nyerere Avenue near Mombasa Sports Club due west and north to terminate at Chagamwe) situated opposite the Uhuru Gardens, commemorated the visit of H.R.H Princess Elizabeth in company with Prince Phillip (Duke of Winchester) to East Africa in 1952. It was a state visit on a circuit of the Commonwealth Nations on behalf of King George VI who was gravely ill at the time. The entourage arrived to a cordial and cheerful welcome from a large crowd lining Moi Avenue Road. H.R.S Princess Margaret on her tour of East Africa also passed under Mombasa’s tusks on September 22th, 1956. Ivory symbolized luxury and was a highly sorted commodity at the time. To date, the monument, depicting letter M for Mombasa, has remained a cherished landmark.
