Arab Rifle’s Monument: Wavell Memorial

Hidden in plain sight to the side of Nkurumah Road, shortly before arriving at Fort Jesus Museum is the Arab Rifle’s Monument also known Wavell Monument. The obelisk standing on a plinth, next to the cannon and high ramparts of Fort Jesus is obscured by the deep shadows of the mature trees. The site commemorates the 1916 Mkongani Battle, where Major Arthur Wavell and 15 of his Arab Rifles died protecting Mombasa from German invasion.
