Natural Landmarks in Garissa Merti Plains: A Featuress Expanse Merti plateau, or Gaar Merti, is the little-known prominent inselberg, rising to an elevation of 540 metres. The main inselberg is striking at a great distance, rising above the flat surrounding plains. It has maintained its relief by the continually resisting erosion for millenia. The steep slopes on one or more sides, often with incised streams, is big enough to be visible in satellite images. Merti Plateau is mainly situated in Isiolo County, extending into the northwest of Garissa County. Thanks its elevated prominence, Merti Plateau forms an important source of potential groundwater for the water-scarce area between Habaswein and the Kenya-Somalia border. Not far from Merti town, ground water of good quality has been run-down, which can be acquired from the many aquifers pinpointed by experts around Merti Plateau using boreholes drilled to depths of 110-150 metres. Extending 160 km west of Habaswein below Merti Plateau, Merti Plain offers a unique scenery composed of a featureless expanse of grey silt interspersed by a badland of red granitic rocks. It stretches as far the eye can see, giving the illusion of an unending desert. In the distance, the embossed plateau is transfixed into the harsh landscape on the eastern edge. It is best seen along the B9 Isiolo-Mandera Road from Garba Tula to Habaswein, or at the edge of Merti town in Isiolo County.
