Kumfunje Bridge

Unusual Attractions in Bungoma Kumfunje Bridge: Not Your Ordinary Bridge Rope suspension bridges, supported by cables or ropes to create an overhang roadway, are often built in scenic locations, offering great views of landscapes, rivers, or canyons. Known for their flexibility, allowing them to sway with external forces like wind or traffic loads, they do, as a general rule, make the legs wobble! Oft-times, only a metal or wooden grate separates you and your next shaky step. Scary though they may be, rope suspension bridge in many places are attractions in and of themselves. Still and all, many rope suspension bridges are designed for day-to-day pedestrian use or light traffic, in remote rural or mountainous regions. 5 km south of Webuye town at the small village of Maraka is one of the surpassing examples of a startling rope bridge. Locally assembled as an alternative to wading and swimming across the formidable, crocodile-infested Nzoia River, it is both a useful resource and an adventure outfit. End to end it spans an impressive 80 ms. It straddles Kenya's second biggest river. This makes it daunting on appearances alone. Cool as it looks, it sets off an air of trepidation. Then there's the superstition around it. And for all that, it is the newcomers who bring the giggles here. It is not easy to cross this shaky bridge. Many have started to cross and stopped midway, too terrified to continue. Others just broke down and wailed, and got fined for it. Built in 1991, and named after Kafunja, the elderly man who used only local knack to put it together, Kumfunje Bridge, now managed by his family, is a swaying and fear-inducing prospect, and an adventure to cross. The wonky wood cross pieces, some in disrepair – all incredibly simple in design and supported entirely from twin anchors at either end with no towers or piers – are the memorable highlight. It may be all fun and games for the traveller, yet Kumfunje Bridge is of real benefit. It saves the villagers an hours walk through the hilly terrain. The wobbling and creaking notwithstanding, the locals, with impressive ease, make light work of crossing it, much to the fascination of newcomers. Everyone crossing the bridge is required to pay an obligatory Kes. 10 per day and can cross it as many times. Visitors to Kumfunje Bridge, sometimes known as Mufunje, are also required to the pay pocket-friendly fee, all in good fun. That taken care of, you can cross as many times until midnight when the token elapses. Good to note is that it can only accommodate two people at a time owing wholly to it’s withholding capacity and strength. Rather impressive is that the bridge also links Bungoma with Kakamega County – the forbidding Nzoia River being the official boundary separating them. Around Kenya are a selection of natural landmarks, cultural shrines, architectural oddities, and technological installations that offer incredible, almost surreal experiences that can make you feel as if you've stepped into another world. Hauntingly beautiful to some, eerie sights for others, and still, for others, down right strange, these site provide unique experiences for adventurous travelers.
