History of Busia

About Busia Way Back When Brief History of Busia County Although most native residents of Busia County are ethnically Luhya , it is more associated with the lesser Teso tribe. A substantial population of Luo also call Busia County home. Ethnographers all agree that the homeland for Nilo-Saharans, from which the Teso stem, is in eastern Sudan, dating back to before 6000 BCE. The Kalenjin sub-tribes, also of Nilo-Saharans origin, point to Tuluop Kony ( Mount Elgon ), north of Busia, as their point of dispersal in Kenya. The Kenyan Teso, local to Busia County, are an extension of their Ugandan opposite-number, merely separated by the border that draws from the partition of East Africa; just like the Maasai and Oromo. In the same light, the Teso are among the Plain Nilotic groups closely related to the Turkana, Karamojong, Toposa, Maasai and Samburu. Still and all, the people of Busia County in Kenya and Busia District in Uganda have on all occasions and over millenia sought good and cordial relations, and the Samia, Iteso, Banyala, Acholi/Japadhola (a mirror community of the Kenyan Luos) and Abagissu, who mirror the Kenyan Bukusu, have always traded and married. Teso is a Nilo-Saharan language spoken by the Teso, an ethnic group in eastern Uganda and western Kenya. Estimated to be about eight per cent of the Ugandan total population, the Teso people make one of the biggest tribes in the country. Likewise, the Teso are counted among the most progressive farmers of Uganda. This rich history of tribal relations dates back to ancient times. Fast forward to 1963, when Busia District was officially formed, largely along the eons old tribal borders. It became an administrative district in the Western Province of Kenya . It bordered Kakamega District to the east, Bungoma and Teso District to the north, Uganda to the west, and Lake Victoria to the south . In 1956, Elgon Nyanza District was split from North Nyanza District. The new headquartered became Bungoma . In 1963, the district was split into two: Bungoma and Busia, all within Western Province. Busia town, the present county headquarters, was formerly a colonial era border outpost. It has kept up as one of the busiest of Kenya's 35 gazetted entries that facilitate trade. Busia border point, the concept one-stop border post border with Uganda, is a critical entry and exit point. Seven of the other busy border points between Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania includes Malaba, Isebania, Taveta, Lunga Lunga, Loitoktok and Namanga. In all, Kenya has 35 border point.
