Karebe Gold Mining: Kenya’s Largest Producer

The Karebe Gold Mining Company Ltd., has been undertaking mining operations at Karebe, south of South Nandi Forest at the foot slopes of Nyando Escarpment nearby Kibigori and Miwani, since 2009. It was founded the previous year, in 2008, by MD David May and the Maris Group. It holds special prospecting license 264 which covers three previously worked mines about Nandi County in Western Kenya; Equatorial, Rock Corry and Boma Mines. Other small scale artisan mining activities by native communities also subsist near Karebe. Although Karebe is the largest gold producer in Kenya today, by regional standards it is small scale.

Karebe Gold Mining has developed an underground narrow vein mining operation that employs 330 people and has contributed a whooper two billion shillings in local contributions to the economy during the life of the mine. Plans are underway to scale the mine up further and increase our exploration activities. Whilst gold in moderate amounts has been discovered at various locations around Kenya, such as West Pokot, Laikipia and Machakos, mining has been largely restricted to areas in which the Nyanzian and Kavirondian Systems are found; that is to say, around the Kisii highlands and near Kibigori in Nandi County. At the same time, Karebe Gold Mining offers one of few opportunities in Kenya to learn about gold dig-ups.
