Kakuzi Boran Barn: A Roadtrip Treat

Nairobi, the melting pot of Kenya, is home to innumerable barbecue joints, locally awarded the epithet ‘nyama choma’ – the beloved and iconic Kenyan dish that translates to “roasted meat” in Swahili – offering regional styles that reflect local traditions, flavors, and braai techniques. Known for the long lines, street food isle setup and perfectly roated meat, people often wait for hours to get a taste of nyama choma at many a pallor. The meat is slow-cooked with oak, resulting in a melt-in-your-mouth texture and smoky flavor. Traditionally, goat meat is the most popular choice for nyama choma, but chicken, pork, and lamb are also common.

Which is why Kakuzi Boran Barn is slowly cutting a niche for itself, specializing in beef raised at their farm. The meat is usually slow-roasted over an open charcoal fire or wood grill in the usual nyama-choma ritual. It’s typically marinated with simple ingredients like salt, pepper, and sometimes a little lemon or garlic, though the focus is on the natural flavor of the meat. In the self-same tradition, a fresh salad made from tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and sometimes avocado or chili accompanies the nyama-choma. And because nyama choma is more than just a meal – it’s a social event, Kakuzi Boran Barn have setup a cozy outdoor area.

The 213 km2 Kakuzi Ranch, noteworthy as the only extensive ranch in Muranga County, is a privately-run ranch listed as a limited company at both the Nairobi Stock Exchange and the London Stock. Its core business is agriculture; farming avocados, pineapples, macadamia, horticulture, tea, coffee and timber, and the packaging of related products and beef ranching. 11 km2 are under joint project pineapple production with Del Monte, a world leader in the growing, canning and marketing of pineapples. Coffee has been produced at Kakuzi Ranch since 1919, and it was one of two foremost crops grown here alongside sisal, which failed.

The original 101 km2 of the current Kakuzi Ranch originated from land bought by Donald Seth-Smith around 1906. The central location for Kakuzi Ranch was christened Makuyu, the native name for fig trees seen at Makuyu Head Office.

Along its entire stretch, from Ngeiya Valley Dam and Del Monte near Thika to Makuyu town, Kakuzi Ranch provides pleasant farmland vistas especially of its commercial wood plantation lining Nairobi-Nyeri Road. Kakuzi Ranch also has different outlets that sell some of its products, mostly fruits in season and beef products. Then, there’s the 9-holes Makuyu Golf Club found on the outskirts of the Ranch and views of Ol Doinyo Sabuk or Mount Kilimambogo seen to the far east as you drive towards Nyeri. Kakuzi headquarters are found near Makuyu town.
