Buli (Kahawa) Monument: Omani CoffePot Relic

Buli is the localized term for the ‘bronze-coloured’ kettle, with accessories, built outside Fort Jesus near the visitors’ carpark, where the two main streets to Old Town converge. It also fronts the Fort Seafood Restaurant and Pizzeria, one of the much-liked eateries at Old Town. Apart from its recognizable appeal for selfies, Buli, also known as the Kahawa Monument, renders a metaphor of a shared cup of coffee and its significance in bringing people together. “One evening in 1987, two men working at a curio shop outside Fort Jesus conceived an idea to erect something to mark ten years of former President Daniel Moi’s rule”. Ali Taher, also known as Faiz ‘Ali curio’, and Alawi – adept artists in their own rights, got to work!

They sought the help of a UN conservationist attached to Fort Jesus Museum, who not only bought the idea but also offered to design the kettle. Ali Curio designed the structure and offered building materials. Within a month, the three foot kettle was complete; with a fountain. The ‘bronze-painted’ buli is a representation of the prominent kettles used during the olden days, bearing its origin from the Middle East. The kettles were made of bronze in consideration to the metal’s ability to retain heat and keep coffee hot for long periods. These have since gone out of market. By the side of the kettle are three Arabian coffee mugs, two of them on top of one another and one enjoined to the two with a layer of lime- mortar. Two other mugs are placed off centre in the circle enclosure to make a total of five.
