英文原文
Driving to Lamu from Malindi is potentially a headliner road trip, often sold short, as Lamu is primarily accessed by air to Manda Island’s airport. The isolation and remoteness of the 117 km long C112 Road linking Minjila to the Mokowe Jetty, with moments, travelling along on this route, when you will feel like you are alone, is a worthwhile road trip. It crosses a vast country with wildly different terrains and landscapes. Just recently gaining the attention of motorists, it was not always a commendable trip. The route, usually impassable during the rainy season, was a bandits haven. The erratic flairs of violence around Witu Forest didn’t help either.
With the upgrade of the C112 Road in 2021, now under a fresh and unsullied strip of black-top, it is clear to see why the road is one of the great human institutions, because it has profoundly changed the humble function of travelling to Lamu by road. It has created a novel experience of space, and the section crossing Witu Forest, between Witu and Pangani, is a remarkably scenic roadside. 56 km2 in area, Witu Forest, a combination of Utwani and Gongoni forests, is a significant biodiversity reservoir and important elephant migratory corridor linking Dodori National Reserve (east), Amu Ranch (north) and Kipini Conservancy (south).
Gazetted in 1962 as a reserve, it’s now under custody of David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Saving Habitats Program, undertaking its long-term conservation through community conservation. Part of the plan is to open it up for direct and indirect economic benefits for the locals, in a bid to realize the huge prospects for eco-tourism given its easy access. Among the interest at Witu Forest include: Pangani swamp in the north-east, settlement area in the south-west and Nairobi ranch in the south-east. As a part of the Tana Delta and its associated forests, Witu is a unique ecosystem of the Northern limit of Eastern Arc Mountains. Further along the C112 Road, past Witu, one can begin to appreciate Lamu’s terrestrial, inter and subtidal systems, carving out an scenic continuum enroute Mokowe 64 km away.
Kenya’s vast forest reserves are of immeasurable importance in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage. Collectively, these forests, natural and exotic, cover 2008 km2 or about 3.4% of Kenya’s land surface area, and 15% of the most fertile land. They also provide important recreational and ecotourism opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife.
