Simot Twin Falls: A Little-Known Marvel

Baringo County is stamped with several beautiful and unique natural attractions. Among these are its little-known waterfalls. Naturally, waterfalls are formed at the upper stages of a river as it flows over different layers of rock. It erodes soft rock more quickly than hard rock and this may lead to the creation of a waterfall. Hard rocks are left overhanging and eventually collapses. Then the fallen rocks crash into the plunge pool, bathed eternally by the cascading falls – long and short.

There are numerous spectacular waterfalls around Kenya, each with its own unique beauty and charm. Many of these waterfalls attract visitors from around the world, offering not only stunning views but also opportunities for adventure photography and appreciation of the natural world. Discovering unknown or less-visited waterfalls in Kenya can lead to unique, authentic and fulfilling travel experiences. Among these is Simot Falls, near Ossen center, in Baringo County.

Earmarked to be the first Geopark in Baringo, Simot Falls is an out-of-this-world marvel. Standing at the edge of the cliff, where the 200 ms twin falls cantilevers over, it holds to true that “a strong man and a waterfall channel their own path”. Here, way off-the-beaten-paths, its spectacular beauty is both a marvel and a riddle of nature. The falls, the cliff, and the blissful pools at the bottom, with the sun rays glinting brightly in the clear waters, captures every imagination.

Of a recent development, in 2019, a 1.2 km long barrier fence was put in place, thanks to philanthropy of Baringo North business man Jonathan Tokei. It was put in place primarily to enhance safety and prevent access to potentially dangerous areas around waterfalls, which had caused many accidents. It was important where terrain was rugged, and the risk of injury is high. Thankfully, the simple but effective barrier did not knock-off the aesthetic and environmental aspects.
