Near Marigat is the Perkerra Irrigation Scheme, where the waters of the Perkerra River have been diverted to irrigate large areas of the fertile but barren flats of the ancient Lake Kamasia. Irrigation’s not new here, the local Njemp having practiced it long before European settlement although until the start of this scheme the craft had been almost forgotten. Currently, Perkerra Irrigation Scheme has opened up about 2,750 acres to irrigation with 1,625 farming households benefiting from it.
Apart from the main irrigation scheme, there are other out-grower schemes which from time to time call for assistance in irrigation infrastructure rallying from the scheme. These include; Eldume, Sandai, Kamoskoi and Kapkuikui.
Perkerra Irrigation Scheme has two crops in each season, the Main Crop which is Seed Maize, and the second crop which includes Green grams, Okra, Cowpeas and Nerica rice. Other crops planted include: cassava, sorghum, finger millet, onions, tomatoes, butternuts, watermelon, mangoes, pawpaws, and bananas.
A total acreage of 2,500 has been dedicated to seed maize cropping in the 2020/2021 cropping season in Perkerra Irrigation Scheme enabling farmers to realize the success of entering into seed production contracts. Rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure has been improved and a fruit-tree-seedlings nursery propagated to promote the increase Baringo's green cover to the targeted 10%.
