Beyond Namunyak and Sera Conservancies onto Losai National Reserve via the centers of Merille and Laisamis 104 km from Archer’s Post along A2 Road, the northern region of Samburu County is marked by grand alluvial inland peaks of Ndoto Mountains and Nyiru Range, consecutively. With summit points reaching 2,752 ms and declining to crests of 400 ms as you near Lake Turkana, these chain of mountains consisting of old crystalline basement rocks are hauntingly beautiful.

Rising abruptly to the west of the Matthews Range and northeast of the town of South Horr, part of the larger Samburu ecosystem, Ndoto Mountains are known for their dramatic landscapes, cultural significance, and rich biodiversity, making them a hidden launch for adventurous travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences. The mountains rise sharply from the surrounding arid plains, creating a dramatic contrast between the lush highland vegetation and the dry lowlands.

To the north Ndoto Mountains overlook the broad Kaisut Desert, separating them from Mount Marsabit. A dense forest clads the upper reaches, although much of the deeply-gullied sides and rocky peaks of remain exposed. The tallest peak, Mount Poi, clearly rises over 700 ms over the surrounding range. There are about a dozen more impressive cliffs rising over 500 ms, many of these peaking as high as 300 ms and 1000 ms in width. Ndoto Mountains are best sighted at Ngurunit.

The Ndoto Mountains hold cultural importance for the local Samburu and Rendille communities. These communities have lived in the area for generations, and their traditional way of life is deeply connected to the land.
