Overlooking Voi town and a salient roadside attraction for the Mombasa bound traveller along A109 Road or aboard Madaraka Express, Mount Sagalla, isolated and brimmed with scarps, rises 1520 ms above the surrounding plains. It breaks the monotony of the low relief around Voi. With the exception of the cluster of hills near Voi and Maungu Plains, the bushland persists seemingly without end. Notwithstanding the fact that Sagalla lies 20 km away from the main Taita Hills complex it is the second peak of the trio massifs that make up this vast landmark.

Also dubbed Sagalla (Sagala) Hills, just its higher slopes are covered with exotic forests, homogenous to those seen at Dawida Hill. Its lower slopes are covered by an Acacia type bushland. And akin to Mount Kasigau further south, the forest arc of Mount Sagalla harbours a varicoloured assembly of rare and endemic floral. On the extreme, the entire Sagala forest is almost covered with Eucalyptus with only a patch of indigenous forest. All of Sagalla’s forests are augmented with exotic groves planted several decades ago. The two main towns surrounding the hills, Rakhasi and Talio, border the Kasigau Wildlife Corridor and the Mgeno Ranch.

Generally speaking, Taita Hills’ forests are small patches of forests on the hills like islands in a sea of intensive agriculture. None of the forests is free from human impact. Kisagalla is the language of the Sagalla people who dwell around Mount Sagalla and also on the sprawling lowland about its forest. There has been major controversy surrounding the status of the Kisagalla as either being a fully fledged language or a dialect of Kidawida spoken by community living around Dawida Hill. Mount Sagalla is located 18 km south of Voi Town and can be seen from many miles out including from Mwatate, Manyani, Maungu, Rukinga and from Voi itself.
