英文原文
Aptly monikered as the Bat Cave of Kakamega Forest, after the thousands upon ten of thousands of bats that make this their home, within the eerie chambers and cracks in the rocks, Lirhanda Cave, situated on Lirhanda Hill in the southern area of the Kakamega Forest Reserve, is a fascinating natural attraction popular with trippers interested in wildlife, geology, and adventure. The cave is reached via a designated signposted hiking trails that starts from various points in the forest. It is one of the unique highlights within the Kakamega Forest, offering an opportunity to observe bats and experience a mystical, hidden, part of the forest ecosystem.
Moreover, Lirhanda Cave is home to several species of bats, which can be seen hanging from the walls and flying out at dusk, ergo it is home to one of the largest bat colonies in Kenya. Is is estimated that over 111 bat species take residence in its chamber. The spectacular staging, at dusk, as the spectral cloud of bats heads-out from the cave to feed is psychotropic. Bats have historically suffered from human persecution because of misconceptions about them. Quite the contrary, bats are important emissaries of pollination, and a big check on insects, in their service to nature. The forest around the cave is teeming with monkeys, birds, and butterflies.
The summit of the Lirhanda Hill, which at 1,700 ms is the most elevated area in Kakamega Forest Ecosystem, offers superb views over the forest canopy, Nandi Escarpment and beyond. The path to and from the Lirhanda Cave also goes past memorable and lovely views of River Yala and Isukhu Falls, where trippers can enjoy the healthful serenity of the forest and its diversity of birds and butterflies. Visitors can explore the cave with a guide who explains its history, geology, and ecological significance. Do remember to account for some essentials of walking and hiking: Wear comfortable sturdy closed hiking shoes, bring along a flashlight or headlamp, essential for exploring the dark cave, insect repellent, and water.
While Kenya may not be as well-known for its caves as some other destinations, there are still some fascinating caving sites worth exploring. Before embarking on a caving expedition, it’s essential to ensure safety by going with a knowledgeable local guide, wearing appropriate gear, and being aware of potential hazards.
