英文原文
At the close of 19th century, the Orkoiyot (or divine leader from the Talai Clan) took an almost executive role when Koitalel Arap Samoei led the Nandi nation to resist colonial rule, for 11 years, opposing alienation from their ancestral land. He had a strong military and he was feared. After his defeat the British briefly tried to harness his Talai clansmen to the system of colonial rule – promoting them as chiefs. This was based upon a misunderstanding of the status of Orkoiyot, whose powers often stood in direct conflict with the authority, yet, lionized by the locals.
Koitalel arap Samoei was born around 1860 among the Nandi people of Kenya, the son of Kimnyole arap Turukat, a famous Nandi Orkoiyot (spiritual and military leader). After his father was killed by rival groups, Koitalel was taken into hiding for safety and raised secretly among the Kipsigis, where he received spiritual training and warrior education. As he grew older, Koitalel returned to the Nandi and was recognized for his spiritual insight, leadership ability, and prophetic disposition. Following the death of the previous Orkoiyot, Koitalel was initiated and installed as Orkoiyot, a role that combined religious, political, and military leadership.
Through this position, Koitalel united the Nandi and reorganized their military strength. His rise coincided with increased British penetration into the Rift Valley. Using his inherited authority and personal charisma, Koitalel mobilized the Nandi people to resist foreign control, laying the foundation for one of the strongest and longest African resistances to British colonial rule in Kenya. Using guerrilla tactics and a deep spiritual veil, Koitalel led the Nandi in years of successful resistance.
The modest Koitalel Museum in Nandi Hills town honours Koitalel Arap Samoei, the legend who led one of the mettlesome charges against adverse colonial land policies in Kenya ( Nandi Resistance ) at the height of colonial occupation in Kenya. On October 19, 1905, on the grounds of what is now Nandi Bears Club, Koitalel Arap Samoei was asked to meet Col Richard Meinertzhagen for a truce. Koitalel agreed! Instead, Meinertzhagen killed Koitalel and his entourage in cold blood. Sosten Saina, the grand-nephew of one of Arap Samoei’s bodyguard recalled:
