Kikojo Falls
Kikojo Falls

Lake Baringo

Kikojo Falls

Kikojo (Kikocho) Falls: The Rain God Abode
Waterfalls are often admired for their scenic beauty and the dynamic display of water cascading over rocks. Kikojo offers this in plenty, and an exceptional trail with splendid view. Worth a visit by the avid hiker and nature lover hankering after roads less travelled, Kikojo Falls, at the base of Morop Hill, is a jewel at end the of an unbeaten trail. It’s a rousing adventure. At the end of the trail, the hill is surrounded by big tamarind trees and in between is a spring. A serene setting!
The 10 km walk to and from Kikojo Falls is an easy-moderate hike. It presents a reasonable level of difficulty, requiring a moderate level of physical fitness and endurance, but it is achievable by almost anyone. The trail conditions, over a generally well-maintained footpath with stable footing are good but unmarked. A local guide is useful in getting the whereabout. In good company, on a casual walking pace, hikers can expect to spend a half-day or a full day on the trail.
It's enough to provide a good workout without being overly strenuous, the efforts of which are rewarded with memorable views. The trail, which includes a mix of forested areas, open hillsides and some rocky sections, has great views of Morop Hill, Kipkolel Forest, Kirandich Dam, Lake Baringo and, with good binoculars, Mt. Kenya. While scrambling or basic rock hopping may be involved, it's not extreme.
Kikojo Falls is agreeably a hauntingly beautiful site. Beneath the falls, there is a 50 ms-long, dark cave. This is where the legendary Tugen ‘rain god’ used to dwell, before it was evicted by an undaunted hero popularly known as Arap Tarno. As the story tell: The rain god succumbed to the wounds inflicted along Kerio Valley in Keiyo. Balefully, it was pregnant by that time and its generation lives on.
