Formerly dubbed Gir-Gir Group Ranch, now under the aegis of Northern Range lands Trust on behalf of the local Samburu community, the vast 385 km2 Kalama Conservancy, contiguous with Samburu National Reserve in the south, contains a good concentration of game. Kalama Conservancy is part of the open-borders wildlife migration corridor that links Nakuprat Gotu and Sera Conservancies with Samburu National Reserve. From the comfort of the luxurious yet kooky, locally-themed Saruni Samburu Lodge, holiday-makers to Kalama can wallow in the magnificent scenery with fetching views of the fairyland forest of Mathews Range.

Also contained at the conservancy is the community-run Samburu Bead-Works Project, where one gets to mingle with the jovial Samburu community who are in turn happy to give visitors as warm a welcome as can be had in any boondocks of Kenya. Key wildlife species at Kalama Conservancy include elephants, Reticulated giraffes, Beisa oryx, lions, Grevy’s zebras, wild dogs, gerenuk, lesser and greater kudus, leopard, cheetah among others. The diversity of birds is great, too. Those arriving by air land at one of two nearby airstrip or at the helipad at Saruni Lodge. Via A2 Road the entry into Kalama Conservancy is 22 km north of Archer’s Post.

Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being.
