One of Diani’s exceptional, if not the only, artificial reefs, Funguo Wreck, started life underwater on February 21, 2002. And for over two decades since, it has been collecting yellow tubes, encrusting and orange corallimorph sponges. Slowly but surely, as it became one with ocean, it flourished as a haven for myriad variegated marine life. Hitherto, MV Funguo ran aground in the reef outside Kilindini Harbour, before being salvaged and re-sunk delicately by ‘Diving the Crab’ off Diani Beach.
Since its sinking just off their diving base located at the Sands at Nomad on Diani Beach, the 45 ms long MV Funguo, a former fish-trawler, has turned into one of Kenya’s top diving sites. Its top lies roughly at 18 ms with the base lying at 27 ms, which means this colourful dive site can be accessed by many recreational divers. Garden Eels, Gobies and shrimps surround the base of the wreck, sneaking their heads in and out of the sand. Barracuda, Sweetlips, Fusilier, Batfish, Snappers and Trevallies abound in large schools at the top, camouflaged well against the wreck.
You can also find scorpion fish, leaf fish and frogfish. Other residents include Giant Moray Eel, Thorny Stingray, Lionfish, and if you are lucky… whale sharks! Because Funguo was purpose-sunk, many features, like the hall, remain in good condition, plus, a lot of the smaller, interior chambers have been made accessible to marine life. Those wishing to dive MV Funguo wreck must have a qualification that allows them to dive to 30 ms; Advanced Open Water I Deep Adventure Dive certificate.
Enriched Air Nitrox is recommended to enjoy a longer bottom time and get the most out of this dive site, however, it is not mandatory. With over 30 years of diving experience in Kenya, Diving the Crab, who operate dives here, offer an unparalleled level of service and expertise in the industry and are listed among Kenya’s best diving centre. Diving the Crab operate two other centres at; Baobab Beach Resort and Chale Island. To book, contact Diving the Crab at: 0723 108108.
