Treasury Square: Of Modish At Old Town

What little influence of the British there is at Old Town is wholly made up at the Treasury Square, situated just 50 metres from the Old Law Courts. Contrary to its description Treasury Square is a big oval. The houses are built around the Burhani Gardens in the middle of Treasury Square. Here, like at Old Town, time has almost stood still. The elegant, carefully-planned, quintessentially British robust angular brick holdings with underlying ethos of muscular pillars, round-headed arches, classical detailing and workmanship are a fine expression of English architecture and urban planning. Off-center to both the British and Omani Arabs, the ancient Portuguese left little evidence of their two centuries-long presence in Mombasa. The famed citadel Fort Jesus completed in 1596 is their most exceptional legacy.
