Torok Waterfalls
Waterfalls in Elgeyo Marakwet Torok Waterfalls: A Visual Stunner Torok Falls in among the highest plunge waterfalls in Kenya. It has a single 200 metres vertical drop, where the water loses contact with the rock face and free-falls into a pool below. It's not only visual roadside stunner, at Kolol Viewpoint and along C51 Iten-Kabarnet Road, but is also an ace hiking trail. Not to be missed on any trip to this region, the lovely Torok Falls is a popular tourist site, offering opportunities for photography and experiencing the beauty of nature up close. More spectacular in the rainy season, when the swelling river creates the most powerful cascade, with a cloud of spray and mist rising from the base, Torok Falls is typically accessed by foot on a 2 to 5 hour hike round-trip. The 10 km walking trail starts at Kolol Viewpoint, off C51 Iten-Kabarnet Road, and ends nearby Torok Primary. Part of the trail is accessible to 4X4 vehicles. Even so, it is for the most part a backcountry walking expedition. Local guides, available at Kolol, are useful and recommended, although the path is well-beaten to the base of the falls. Leaving the main road, the path snakes along a hushed countryside that is only broken-up by disassociate villages. If you love the outdoors, this is a walk amid cinematic landscapes. The air is fresh! The wander along the gently uphill country, framed by the dramatic landscape of Elgeyo Escarpment, getting prettier as you near the falls, terminates at the Torok Primary School. From here, the scramble to Totok Falls, heard bellowing a welcome in the distance, takes to a narrow path hardly used by humans or animals. Lo and behold, a stonecast away, a fine sight lies in wait. In the dry season, however, Torok Falls may be no more than a trickle. The adequate and restful Kolol Hill Cottages not far away from Kolol Viewpoint and Torok Falls offers reasonable living. It serves as a good jumping-off place. Difficulty: Moderate; Distance Covered: 10 km; Steps: 15,221; Total time: 2 hr 58 min; Moving time: 2 hr 20 min ; Min. Elevation: 1,559 m; Max.
