Tiwi Beach: Secluded Untouched Vibes
South of Mombasa Island, the continuous strip of coastline between Likoni and Msambweni, backed by palms and broken once or twice by small rivers, runs for 91 km. Tiwi Beach, 17 km south of the Likoni Ferry, is the nearest developed resort area in Kwale County. The 15 km long Tiwi-Mwachema River-Diani-Galu Beach evenly divides itself into three primary hubs: Tiwi-Mwachema River Beach, Diani Beach and Galu Beach. Playing second fiddle to Diani Beach, and situated about 7 km before arriving at Ukunda, Tiwi Beach, although pleasantly delightful, is not as glamorous in its listing of hotels, but judging by growth of investment it is growing in popularity. Gradually and steadily, investors are taking interest in the Tiwi area.
Presently, the resorts are not as sufficient or widespread as those at Diani Beach. It is reached by taking a left turnoff shortly after passing Waa and the turnoff to Shimba Hills National Reserve (right) along a motorable all-weather road taking one to the oceanfront where most of its resorts spread out. Here, like at Diani, the invaluable reef runs parallel to the coastline from 300 ms to 1,000 ms. Among the noteworthy beach resorts at Tiwi include: Amani Tiwi Beach Resort, Twiga Lodge, Coconut Beach Boutique Lodge, and the Hillpark Resort. It also has a wide range of chic villas and cottages to include: Moune Villas, Swahili House and Tiwi Villas.
Some highlights at Tiwi Beach include: the old Kongo Mosque nearby Amani Tiwi Beach Resort, Mwachema River and a fascinating natural-pool shaped like Africa. Where the Kongo River meets the Indian Ocean is also perfect for kayaking and birdwatching. Tiwi and Diani Beaches are separated seaward by the small under-developed Diani-Chale Marine National Reserve. Tiwi Beach remains relatively undeveloped compared to other coastal destinations, affording it a secluded and untouched vibe. Shimba Hills National Reserve is located 40 km west. Tiwi Beach is accessible via the Likoni Ferry from Mombasa, followed by a short 5 km drive.
Kenya is renowned for its stunning coastline along the Indian Ocean, offering a variety of beautiful beaches that cater to different preferences – from bustling resorts to quiet, secluded coves and picture-postcard creeks. Diani Beach, known for its powdery white sands and turquoise waters, is, perhaps, the most popular. Yet, each offers a unique experience, in almost always perfect tropical weather.
