Thingira Cultural Village: Blast From The Past

Thingira Cultural Village, located off the A2 Nairobi-Nanyuki Road at the crest of the Sagana Bridge opposite from the entrance to Tebere Concrete Company and 2 km ahead of the Makutano Juntion to Embu-Meru, is designed to showcase and perpetuate the heritage of the Agikuyu community. It offers visitors an immersive experience of traditional Kikuyu customs, history, and way of life in a picturesque, authentic setting. It purpose of foundation, at the nexus of the central Kenya, is to precisely depict the traditional life of communities living around Mount Kenya – Ameru, Aembu, Agikuyu and Akamba, as an edifying passage to their rich cultures.

The name Thingira comes from the Kikuyu word for a traditional hut, particularly the one reserved for men within a homestead. In Kikuyu culture, the “thingira” is symbolic of the central role of elders, wisdom, and leadership in the community. Moreover, there are also depictions of a Nyumba or women’s hut, granaries more proper ‘ikubi’ for stores for food like maize, millet, and yams, and a kiln for firing pots. By the same token, each structure is built with natural materials like mud, grass, and wood, staying true to Kikuyu construction methods. Guests to Thingira Cultural Village get to learn on these huts in guided walks around the homestead.

Unique to Thingira Cultural Village is that guests also take part in the jazzy, fast-disappearing Mwomboko Dance; the Agikuyu’s response to the British fox-trot. You also lend a hand and learn how food is prepared in traditional methods and, of course, sample popular dishes offering a taste of the Kikuyu culinary heritage. At hand, elders share tales and legends about Kikuyu traditions, the role of the ancestors, and how the community coexisted with nature. Among many tales, you’ll get to learn about the origin of the Kikuyu people, their hero and heroine founders, the significance of Mount Kenya (Kirinyaga), and the spiritual practices.

Set on 20 acres amidst lush greenery and serene surroundings, offering a peaceful and culturally enriching environment, Thingira Cultural Village is also bordered by River Tana, which offers a wondrous locus to explore. Then, there’s their African-inspired-design rooms – with a modern interior. Some of the popular activities at Thingira Cultural Centre include walking, birding and line fishing. Thingira Cultural Village plays an important role in preserving the Agikuyu culture and educating younger generations and visitors about its progeny. Visitors leave with a deeper understanding of how indigenous communities lived harmoniously with nature.

That Kenya has a rich cultural diversity needs no introduction. It is an invaluable blessing to the nation. To foster an understanding of this heritage, there are cultural centers around Kenya that provide insights into the tapestry of cultures and traditions in their regions. These centers preserve and celebrate traditional practices and customs amidst the shift towards modernization and globalization.
