The Moorings: A Must-Visit Destination

The Moorings is a popular beachfront restaurant and bar located in Mtwapa. It is, according to many, a must-visit destination in the region. The Moorings is known for its relaxed atmosphere, delicious seafood, and stunning views of the Indian Ocean. The star is the variety of seafood dishes of freshly caught fish, prawns, lobster and crab, all served in a picturesque setting. Suitably nourished, visitors can also enjoy a sip on cocktails, or simply relax, unwind and take in the scenic surroundings. It’s a superb location to take in the sunset in true coastal vibe.

Seen as you cross the Mtwapa Bridge, the Moorings has a been a long-standing establishment, which continues to deliver excellent service. What’s more, it is raised on a fixed, secure wooden deck resting on a buoyant platform at Mtwapa Creek, with a delightful waterfront to enjoy the best views of Mtwapa Marina and Mtwapa Bridge: “What is there not to love about a floating restaurant that sways a little as you sit back, relax and sip on a drink and have a bite to eat?” Revered for its stunning setting, and it really is, the seafood is even better than the view.

Aside from its much-liked seafood delicacies, their selection has something for everyone, along a landlubber menu which includes steaks, chicken, pastas dishes and a pizzeria. Since 1994, the Moorings has been a must-go-to-place. The latter-day addition of the Moorings Dhow, a refurbished Arab sailing boat, offers sun-downer dining voyages. The popular dhow has aptly carried on the Moorings legacy as one of the oldest, yet modernly formidable restaurants in the region.

Although this little wonderland floating on Mtwapa Creek is located just over the boundary in Kilifi County, it is associated more with Mombasa County because of its proximity to the city and Island. It is only 16 km from Mombasa, reached via the B8 Mombasa-Malindi Road – taking a turnoff (left) just after the Mtwapa Bridge. A word of caution: The access road to the Moorings is not signposted and visitors need to be on the lookout for a bright storey building named Penthouse. It is less than 1 km from B8 Road to the site over a good tarmac road in a slight disrepair.
