Table Mountain: Aberdare Forest Reserve

Located at the northern end of the Aberdare Range, marked by steep valleys and isolated mounts, Rurimeria rises below Satima Peak, the highest point of the range from where it steeps gradually southerly. Beyond Elephant Hill, below Ruriremeria Hill, the range descends steeply southbound. So that the main climbing trails are Satima Peak, the Table Mountain, Rurimeria Hill, and Elephant Hill, consecutively.

The Table Mountain trail starts at Mikeu, taking you through an initial gentle trek along the forest line. The trail then takes a plunge down to a river crossing. Steep ascent at the beginning with lots of stinging nettle to wake you up. Next comes a shockingly steep, near-vertical ascent for a kilometer or so. Past here is another brief gentle trek, another brief steep ascent, and then onto the final gentle trek through the moorland. Then gets very cold and wet at the moorland area. The trail ends at the Table Mountain peak, at an elevation of 3,792m above sea level. After summit, the descent is very slow given it is rather slippery most of the way down.

Total round trip distance for Table Mountain is 16 km, accomplished in about 8 to 10 hours. It is a tremendous leg day, too, with a whopper 26,514 steps. It is rated moderate to hard, although the latter is truer. Proper hiking gear, shoes and kit, a good stretch at the start, plenty of water and snacks, and mental awareness for the hike challenge are all important. An early morning start will get you back to this gate marker before late afternoon in place where rain is patently consistent. Yet, for all the difficulties of ascending Table Mountain, the views are breathtaking.
