St. Jude Church, Bura
Historic Churches in Tana River St. Jude Church, Bura: An Odd Cathedral Most Catholic churches in Kenya are built with a lighter style of monochrome brick walls, with decorative arches and buttresses of bright marble or similar kind of uniform finish. More elusive, yet fundamental to relate, is a changing attitude to the way churches embody local religious meaning. Few churches in Kenya stand out for the particolours on their facades, a good example of which can be seen at St. Jude Parish. Out of the ordinary, it has a kooky appearance of strong colours. It has blue doors and window, ochre on the roof, forest green on the walls and a golden mustard cream used for accentuation, or decoration. The Catholic Church architecture went through rather dramatic changes from the middle of the 19th century, which explains why there is such a wide variation from the conventional archetypes against the styles commonly referred to as ‘High Victorian’. St. Jude’s Parish at Bura, in company with five Catholic churches at Hola, Garissa, Wajir, Emmaus and Mandera, are fit identifiers of the new wave of modern churches. Stripped of the gothic architectural dress, favoring a design that fits the local disposition and common style of design, this new style was also gentler in the pacification approach. The Holy Ghost Fathers (HGF) was the foremost Catholic mission in Tana River, where they established a mission at Wema and later at Hola and Bura in the late 1940s. In 1968, the Consolata Missionaries from Meru begun mission work in Garissa and later moved north to Wajir and Mandera. From 1974 mission work in the area was entrusted to Capuchin Friars of Malta Province. In 1976 the territory forming part of Mombasa and Meru dioceses was declared a Prefecture Apostolic and elevated to Diocese in 1984. In 2000, the southern part of Garissa Diocese (Wema, Garsen, Mpeketoni and Lamu) was detached from the Diocese of Garissa to form part of the Diocese of Malindi. This covers 142,704 km2 and has seven parishes: Garissa, Hola, Bura, Wajir, Mandera, Bura, Emmaus and Wenje with a following of 813,330 people. St. Jude Cathedral is situated at Bura.
