River Sondu Bridge

Attractions in Nyamira County River Sondu Bridge: A Local Quadripoint At first glance there's little to commend River Sondu Bridge, crossed 2 km before getting to Sondu town. But this is not your average boondock's bridge, however strong in likeness it is to this monikers. Since days of yore, when the forefathers roamed this country and engaged in trade, wars, and daring romantic quests, River Sondu was the unofficial boundary marking the northern-end of Gusiiland. Soon as the district borders came into being, River Sondu became one of few quadripoints in Kenya. A point that touches the border of four distinct counties. Dubbed the “lake-highland nexus”, River Sondu Bridge makes easy work of separating four counties – Kisumu, Kericho, Homa Bay, Nyamira – that are diametrically opposed, tribally. Up the road, Sondu, on the border of Kericho and Kisumu counties, has for decades now been an arena for settling tribal scores, making headlines for all the wrong reason. Incidences of inter-tribal clashes are frequent, as the Gusii, Kipsigis and Luo come to blows. Change of guard during electoral seasons is, without doubt, the quick-to-catch-fire-kindling that sparks discords, between or among, pitting the communities against each other. The polarizing political sentiments in either county, aiming to divide-and-rule or join-and-crush, is the potent fire lighting gel. Politics, campaigns, elections and crowning over, the people revert to their tolerant peaceful coexistence. Which also goes a long way in explaining the difference between cultural diversity and tribal differences. Same coin, really! Businesses at the border town of Sondu remain paralyzed for the better part of the days when angry youth barricade the busy Ahero-Sondu road to protest the killings, bringing business to a standstill. River Sondu, over which River Sondu Bridge crosses, is one of the main rivers in western Kenya. It rises on the slopes of Mau Escarpment and debouching into Lake Victoria; distance 190 km. It drains a river catchment area of 5,180 km2. Yunith River, that also rises on the Mau, draining parts of Kericho, Bomet and part of Kisii counties, as well as Kapsonoi River, draining parts of Kisii, are the main tributaries of River Sondu. Beyond River Sondu Bridge, it flows through narrow, hilly gorges, bypassing the Nyakach Escarpment, meandering into Odino Falls, before draining into Lake Victoria at Osodo Bay 22 km southeast of Kisumu City. A word of extra context is necessary here: Although the narrative of River Sondu Bridge as an ancient quadripoint has stood as truth for eons, it is on technicality aggrandized, but the margin of error is tolerable. The bridge is infact a tripoint where Homa Bay, Kericho and Kisumu meet at a point. The tripoint where Homa Bay, Nyamira and Kericho converge is 1 km south of River Sondu Bridge. However, these revisions in borders came many years after its original marker use. On a broader outlook, there are more than 150 tripoints in the world, but only one inter national quadripoint, where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe meet. Kenya is blessed with several rivers, each playing a vital role in the country's ecosystem, economy, and culture. The longest of these is the Tana, stretching approximately 1,000 kilometers from its source in the Aberdare Mountains to the Indian Ocean. Long, wide, short, seasonal, the rivers that crisscross Kenya each contributes to the natural beauty, biodiversity, and socio-economic success.
