Major Rivers in Kirinyaga

Nyamindi River: A Mountain Sprite

Kirinyaga County has six primary rivers – Sagana, Nyamindi, Thiba, Rupingazi,  Rwamuthambi and Ragati – all draining into the River Tana. The fast-flowing Nyamindi River, 57 km in length, is sighted along Kamweti Route and en-route to Embu town nearby God’s Bridge. Despite its torrent, it is a favored swim spot by the locals as well as a fast growing rafting exploit. Nyamindi River, flowing in the southern half of Kirinyaga, is one of two big rivers feeding River Tana from Mount Kenya, alongside Thiba. River Sagana has its headwaters in the Aberdare Range.

Kenya is blessed with several rivers, each playing a vital role in the country’s ecosystem, economy, and culture. The longest of these is the Tana, stretching approximately 1,000 kilometers from its source in the Aberdare Mountains to the Indian Ocean. Long, wide, short, seasonal, the rivers that crisscross Kenya each contributes to the natural beauty, biodiversity, and socio-economic success.
