Ragia Falls: Ragia Forest Trail, Aberdares

Ragia Forest is one of twenty forests that consist the 1,149 km2 Aberdare Forest Reserve, extending over the four counties of Nyandarua, Muranga, Kiambu and Nyeri. Ragia Forest covers 26 km2, of which 17 km2 is a natural forest, 8 km2 is planted forest, and 1 km2 is glades. It is the 6th southernmost forest following Kamae, Kieni, Kinale, Kereita and Uplands. Ragia Falls Forest Trail is reached via C67 Flyover-Magumu-Njabini Road using the Ragia Forest Station at Sasumua.

The hike takes on average 6 hours, round-trip. The hike proceeds deep into thick bamboo and follows elephant trails down the valley to march along Sasumua River, then it goes past a pleasant waterfall simply known as Number 18. From number 18 falls the trail aims for an exacting descent duly forming the better part of the trail to yet more sights and a second falls past the spectral Mau Mau Caves. From here the trail goes past a bamboo forest as it aims for the lovely Ragia Falls, marking the quest of Ragia trail. The usual start and finish point is Sasumua Dam.

“The hike is approximately 9km long and is mostly gentle except for when we go down to the waterfall. The descent to the waterfall is long and steep with several slippery sections and can take up to 40 mins to get down to the river. The forest trail is open in places and passes through forest vegetation as well as bamboo thickets and across small streams. The hiking time is about 6-7 hours including time for swimming. Weather tends to be cool and wet. Hiking level: moderate with one long and steep descent to the waterfall.” – Matembezi Travelers Club
