Peponi Hotel Lamu: Landmark at Shela Beach

Almost twenty hotels are squeezed onto the bucolic and charming Shela, but this private estate perched on a bank at the water’s edge, with its sea facing restaurant raised to head level of pedestrians on the way to the picturesque Shela Beach, has blasted the competition out of the water in the past four decades. Unmistakable for its bright roughcast outer wall finished with uncoursed coral in lime mortar, and an antediluvian carronade (short large-calibre cannon) still in original position facing seaward, Peponi Hotel has been a key landmark at Shela Beach since 1967.

Famous for its charming ambiance, ocean views, and access to water activities Peponi Hotel is run by the Korschen family, who happened upon the old building by chance in the 1960’s while on holiday at the Kenyan coast. They converted the aging Arab style house to one of the finest boutique hotels in this area. The hotel has a selection of 28 ocean-facing rooms, each with a singular decor and lay out. Guests have a choice of superior or standard rooms; superior rooms being differentiated by their location, size and private outside area with swing bed.

All the rooms have en-suite bathrooms, overhead fans inside the mosquito net and safes. Exceptional at Peponi Hotel are its gardens – a medley of exotic plants and tropical palms collected from around the world. The tropical gardens, eye-catching and variegated, have over ninety different palm trees, delightful flowers and atypical herbs. Over the past 45 years they have introduced palm from Asia, Europe, North Africa and South America to create a colourful tropical paradise. Their much-liked restaurant and bar are an epicenter of activities at Shela Beach.
