Wildlife Conservancies in Isiolo Oldonyiro Community Conservancy Formerly known as Mpus Kutuk Conservancy, the expansive, 111 km2, Oldonyiro Community Conservancy, established in 2007, covers the entire Oldonyiro Ward and is clustered into four units – Oldonyiro Narupa unit, Oldonyiro Nanapicho, Oldonyiro Naapu and Oldonyiro Nannapa. It is contiguous with the Ol Lentille Conservancy on its eastern marches, bordering Samburu and Laikipia counties. Set on the western edge of Isiolo County, almost completely surrounded by several community conservancies, except along its western frontier, it is also flanked by Ewaso Nyiro River, the all-important source of water. Over the past decade, it has struggled with spells of insecurity, poaching and the atrophying rangelands. It is hoped that the establishment of the conservancy will enable communities to spearhead dialogue, foster conservation and develop tourism. In 2019, Nannapa, one of the four units of Oldonyiro Community Conservancy, hosted the infamous Rhino Charge, which was a great step-forward in putting its name out there. Ondonyiro conservancy has created employment to hundreds of locals (rangers), improved livelihoods, curbed poaching, boosted security both for human beings and wildlife, and lowered the exploits of human-wildlife conflict. Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being. Improved security, better land management, income, employment and support to community projects have all encouraged the epic rise of conservancies unique attractions and experiences.
