Old Webuye Mill
Industries in Bungoma The Abandoned Webuye Pan Paper Mill Abandoned engineering projects often evoke a sense of mystery. They serve as reminders of the complexities that can arise in large-scale engineering endeavors. Old, dilapidated, and abandoned buildings, while offering a glimpse into bygone eras and forgotten stories, pique our curiosity and imagination, often leaving us to wonder what tales the abandoned builds could tell. Every newcomer to Webuye ought to visit the old Webuye Pan Paper Mill, and stare at them for a moment. Since the establishment of this giant factory in 1972, the development of Webuye was so rapid that, it could not be compared to any other small towns in Western Kenya. It created employment opportunities for hundred of workers who flocked the town in search for jobs. Webuye then transformed from a frontier town into an industrial town, displaying welcomed signs of prosperity. Then, in the 1990s, the mill began to falter. Finally, in 2009, the Pan African Paper Mill went bust. This was the genesis and exodus of unceasing urban challenges that almost brought Webuye town on its knees. In short order, the vandalized and rusting machines began to resemble a ruined monument that was a stark reminder of the better past which may never return. If local memories display rosy depictions of Webuye’s industrial past, the factory had a negative impact on the environment and on the community's health, which it tried to mitigate through afforestation. All is not lost. In 2016, the national government privatized Pan African Paper Mill as a way of reviving the dying giant. Rai Group inherited the factory and is now investing massively to rehabilitate the factory. As it stands now, and for the past few years, people have tried to associate lost stories with the abandoned mill. To imagine about the hundred of workers who might have inhabited them. To know what events might have transpired that made people abandon this massive mill. Touring Bungoma County a rich cultural and natural experience.
