Nyiri (Taru) Desert: Above Kenya’s Coast
The principal line of communication in Taita Taveta is A109 Mombasa-Nairobi Road that crosses it on a southeasterly strike through Voi along the same line of course it takes from Mombasa to Uganda. Voi is separated from Mombasa by a 150 km long jerkwater country through the modest towns of Mariakani, Maji ya Chumvi, Samburu, Taru and Maungu, which lie in part of the driest block of the Nyika – a vast plateau of bushland on a flat lying to gently rolling monotonous terrain sloping coastwards. Past Maji ya Chumvi the vast outback of wait-a-bit bush is interspersed by scattered baobabs, beyond which lies Nyiri Desert also dubbed Taru Desert. Contrariwise, on its other reach, Nyiri Desert lies about 50 kilomiles (80 m) east of Lake Magadi and near the northern border of Tanzania.
Covering 100 km2, Nyiri Desert also encompasses sections of Amboseli National Park including the northern half of Lake Amboseli. Presently, the windswept area is red earth and shrub scattered at first, but growing thicker and thicker as you near Voi. At most times of the year just a sweep of grey-jaded bush with whirling dust storms over red rocky inselbergs, where hornbills swoop between May and July, these plains burst into an arras of blue and white convolvulus flowers after the rains in April and December. Remarkably, Nyiri Desert is an ancient migratory corridor for elephants passing from Tsavo East National Park to Mount Kilimanjaro. Other wildlife includes, giraffe, rhinoceros, lion, leopard, lesser kudu, and impala.
Around Kenya are a selection of natural landmarks, cultural shrines, architectural oddities, and technological installations that offer incredible, almost surreal experiences that can make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. Hauntingly beautiful to some, eerie sights for others, and still, for others, down right strange, these site provide unique experiences for adventurous travelers.
