Irrigation Schemes in Bomet Nogirwet Irrigation Scheme: Modern Era Farm Nogirwet Irrigation Scheme, situated in Chebunyo ward of Chepalungu, offers a rewarding and enriching travel experience for greenskeeper and those with a green thumb. It is everything you need to know about how to start a garden, expanded significantly, hosting varieties of crops sustainability. Best of all, it is a rural lifestyle, with the tranquil pleasures of the countryside. Nogirwet Irrigation Scheme also promotes a deeper connection between consumers and producers. Chepalungu Sub-County is characterized by high temperatures and low erratic rainfall, which would otherwise barely support crop production, to fosters an appreciation for agricultural heritage. This was part of genesis of the Nogirwet Irrigation Scheme, a small holder irrigation project started in 2006 by Nogirwet Water Users Association, with financial support from European Union, Bomet County Council and the Chepalungu Constituency Development Fund (CDF). With water in the farms, gravity-fed, the farmers set about to promote high value commercial and subsistence crop production. The Nogirwet Irrigation Scheme brought together farmers from Kapcheogete, Kapkulumben, Kabisoge, Tuiyobei, Kosia and Kamogoi villages. Phase one of the projected 450Ha and 650 farmers target was completed in 2010. Currently, about 80 Ha are under irrigation with 80 farmers in production. Presently, the main crop here is tissue culture bananas. French beans, watermelons, tomatoes and cabbages are among its horticultural crops. Despite performing below its optimal capacity, as it stands today, Nogirwet Irrigation Scheme offers visitors a chance to experience rural life, learn farming practices, and participate in agricultural activities like fruit picking and vegetable harvesting. Rather more importantly, it offers valuable insights for visitors to learn about where their food comes from, challenges faced by the farmers, and the importance of modern agriculture in the local economy and food supply chain. From Narok town, it is 81 km to Nogirwet Irrigation Scheme and 8 km beyond Kipsigis Oasis Sanctuary. You drive out for 60 km from Narok town via B3 Kaplong-Narok-Bomet Road to the small transit town of Mulot. From the turnoff it is 28 km to the site. It is well advised to have 4×4 car for this section that's an all-weather road. From Mulot it is a dusty, jerky ride, with a lot of bumping, yet, for all that, it is an effort well rewarded with a memorable experience at a lovely farm. Kenya has implemented various irrigation schemes to improve agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and promote economic development. Irrigation plays a crucial role in Kenya's agricultural sector, particularly in areas prone to drought and erratic rainfall, by providing a reliable source of water.
