Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: Tsavo West National Park

Established in 1986 at the heart of the Rhino Valley overlooking the lofty Ngulia Hills, the 35 km2 Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary is, conceivably, Kenya’s most gainful Rhino conservation project, earning Tsavo West helpful standing in conservation colloquies. It kicked-off with only three rhinos that have expanded to a population of more than 70. The area is also a beautiful one with the cliffs of Ngulia Hills being a stopover for migratory birds from the Northern Hemisphere, many of which are quite exotic. The sanctuary is fenced, providing a secure environment for rhinos to thrive and keep poacher out. Still, while the focus is on rhinos, Ngulia Sanctuary is also home to other wildlife, such as elephants, buffaloes, and various bird species.

The magnificently sighted Ngulia Safari Lodge along the outer confines of Ndawe Escarpment overlooking Kalunga Valley, offers great value for money. Named after the buzz of cicadas inhabiting them and the howl of wind hitting the bare rocks, producing a roaring sound, the Roaring Rocks, located near the sanctuary, have for long been an observation area for the protection of the black rhino and the fight against poaching. Begun in 1969, the 52-rooms Ngulia Safari Lodge is enchanting and would turn the skeptics of safari to look good as avid adventurers. All kinds of game come to drink at the waterholes near the Lodge and at a natural saltlick favoured by rhinos. It is accessible via the main gate into Tsavo West Park
