Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve: A Sky Canopy

Contiguous with Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and serving as a key wildlife corridor into Mount Kenya National Park, the pristine 55 km2 Ngare-Ndare Forest Reserve is a lush floral gem offering a unique blend of adventure, nature and conservation. Famous for its African olives and red cedar trees, best seen along the 450-meter-long canopy walkway suspended above the forest, offering stunning views of the treetops and wildlife, Ngare-Ndare is a walker’s paradise making this a must-visit for nature lovers and those interested in eco-tourism. At the northern foothills, It forms a part of the lower-lying areas of the Mount Kenya National Park UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the regionally-famous Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

In 2014, Ngare-Ndare Forest was one of the finalist for the coveted Equator Prize Initiative, awarded for the laudable work by the indigenous people living around forests whose efforts are geared towards their protection and restoration towards mitigating climate change. The forest harbors prolific wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, leopards, monkeys, and dazzling avifauna. It also has a rich diversity of plant life, including ancient trees. The azure rock pool glistening at the bottom of a waterfall and 200 year old trees stretching into the canopy are major draws, too. Other attractions include forest camping, game drives and birding.
