Wildlife Conservancies in Tana River Ndera Community Conservancy 42 km north of Garsen, above Tana Primate National Reserve, covering the river part from Mnazini to Baono in Ndera location, is Ndera Community Conservancy. With support from the Northern Rangelands Trust this 150 km2 area, expanding out equidistant on either side of the Tana to form an erect rectangle, with a mix of river forests, bush and grassland with diverse floral species, is in the process of visualizing the current status and future vision for the new Ndera Conservancy. The primary forests are: Kimbu, Awalamunyo, Lalafitu, Nkambini, Sifa, Yutenye, Bulichani, Mkomani, Maramba, Nkanu, Kiluluni, Baguo, Buboya, Bajila, Kinyadu, Omara Gullu, Singo, Kakija, Mpangalani and Matanama. A major focus of the conservancy is to save the forest areas, 35% of which was lost between 2010 and 2018 and replaced by a blend of shrubland, farms and the invasive plants. Much of the loss has occurred in the south-eastern area close to Mnguvweni, Mnazini and Kinyadu a result of the drying up of the forests and wanton destruction. Key wildlife species in Ndera Community Conservancy include the endangered Tana River mangabey, the Tana Red monkey and the distinct Hirola, as well as elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, reticulated giraffe, cheetah, leopard, lion, hyena, bush pig, oryx, ostrich, grants gazelle, bush buck, lesser Kudu, red duiker, eland, among others, and a wide-ranging diversity of birds. Other interests are: temporary lakes; Mkombani, Yokwa, Lemu, Mlonde and Baomo; and oxbow lakes: Makange, Kilwa, Mchangani, Pacha and Mkoleni. The headquarters are situated at Mnazini. The roads are murrum and earth that are impassable during rain season. Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being.
