Nyandarua Forest: A Roadside Stunner

Kenya is home to many breathtaking scenic roads, offering stunning landscapes, wildlife views, and unforgettable road trip experiences. Among these, on the A-Class Roads, are: Nairobi-Naivasha Road (variant Mai-Mahiu) with wide sweeps of the Great Rift Valley and the lakes; Nairobi-Nanyuki Road which after the roller-costar ride down and up the River Tana has splendid views of Mount Kenya and rolling farmlands beyond Timau; Nairobi-Mombasa Road with its unrepeatable passage through the Tsavos; and Nairobi-Garissa Road through a jerkwater plain.

On a lesser extent along Kenya’s secondary B roads are innumerable example to include B5 Nyeri-Nyahururu Road, a lesson in Kenya’s fast-changing ecological gamut. Beyond Mweiga, just 25 km north of Nyeri, with Mount Kenya in the rear, down a hill and round a bend, the roadway is turned into a mosaic of the dense Aberdare Forest on the one hand and the vast golden savanna to the horizon on the other. As you approach Ndaragwa town, the road passes through a tranquil highland road through forest on both sides. Among these is the Ndaragua Forest.

Ndarugua Forest Station is located near Ndaragua town. Home to Ndaragua Falls at Twin Falls Hotel, Ndaragua Forest, in 2020, had 22 kha of forest, which extend over 28% of its land area. In 2023, it lost 35 ha of natural forest, equivalent to 44.9 kt of CO2 emissions. As of 2020, of the 28% forest cover in Ndaragwa County of mainly natural forests about 0.15% was non-natural tree cover. By the same token, Kenya Forest Service in 2021 undertook the fencing of 900 acres of Ndaragwa block, part of the greater Aberdare Forest Ecosystem, to allow it to regenerate.

Kenya’s vast forest reserves are of immeasurable importance in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage. Collectively, these forests, natural and exotic, cover 2008 km2 or about 3.4% of Kenya’s land surface area, and 15% of the most fertile land. They also provide important recreational and ecotourism opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife.
